St. Gerard's Nursing School was established in 1965 as a Grade 1 Midwifery Training school which was financed by the Misereor Germany Miss Jean Amor who was recruited from United Kingdom and appointed the first tutor of the school. From the start, the Midwifery school was an outstanding success in training and result gaining one hundred percent passes in the final council examination.

By 1992, the Archbishop Emeritus Peter Jatau indicated the need for the training of General Nurses to cater for the learning population of the whole north, and advocated for one which was given approval by the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria.
