Job Position: Shipping Operations Officer

Job Location: Lagos

Job Purpose


  • To ensure the safe and efficient operation of Company vessels in accordance with IMS principles.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Issue instructions to vessels regarding day-to-day operation.
  • Advise the Masters of the vessel’s charter contract terms.
  • Issue and send voyage instructions to the Masters.
  • Follow up with voyages at all stages and ensure that vessel's performance is in accordance with the C/P terms and the company’s standards.
  • Ensure that all cargo documents are received promptly and processed accordingly by providing necessary instructions to the  Master/Agents for proper endorsement.
  • Liaise with chartering brokers and charterers and provide all necessary documents required for trading clearance.
  • Assist in defending claims brought against owners by charterers, cargo interests and other third parties.
  • Check in with all stakeholders on the loading/ discharging plans for all vessels.
  • Arrange the supply of bunkers, spares, consumables, fresh water, etc to the vessels.
  • Monitor prompt delivery of vessel’s provisions and stores to avoid vessel’s delay.
  • Monitor all operational aspects of assigned vessel operation including navigation, cargo/ballast handling, safety and environmental protection, etc.to ensure that these are carried out in compliance with the company’s requirements for an efficient, competitive and customer focused operation in compliance with prevailing International and Flag State legislation.
  • Monitor all actions required to restore any possible discrepancy in vessel’s performance and ensure that these actions are properly taken.
  • Instruct agents to handle vessels' business whilst in port.
  • Coordinate with the department on matters related to cargo nature, tanks cleaning, safe navigation, loading/discharging plans, cargo loss control etc.
  • Coordinate with the accounts department for funds required for operations and cash disbursements to the vessel.
  • Comply with the IMS procedures and requirements and demonstrate commitment to safety and environmental excellence by your behavior.
  • Ensure the safe and environmentally sound operation of the vessels.
  • Coordinate with the technical department in relation to the vessels’ performance, any technical issues arising as well as third-party  inspection issues.
  • Participate in the briefing and de-briefing of master’s and deck Officers before and after appointment, as per the IMS relevantprocedures.

Requirements
Education / Experience:

  • Shipping Academy graduate, recognized by National Authorities or a degree from an Institution of higher education.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a similar role.
  • Working knowledge of the English language.
  • A well-established and proven record of work experience in related fields.

Skills:

  • Proven work experience as an Operations Coordinator or similar role
  • Good time management, prioritization, and multitasking abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with colleagues
  • Effective communication, including speaking, writing and active listening
  • Excellent strategic planning and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work for extended hours when required
  • Possess good communication skills (oral and written)
  • Proficient with Microsoft office suite
  • Good analytical skill.
